Recap 2009 – B2B Portals
There was a tug of war between B2B service portals in 2009. All of them have tried their best to prove themselves better then the competitor. Let’s have a quick flashback to B2B industry.
2009 started with continuation to Intel’s funding in IndiaMART.com and just after funding – IndiaMART has roped in Deep Kalra, Founder and CEO, MakeMyTrip.com and Nachiket Mor, president, ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth, as independent members of its board of directors. Then they indulged in the debate for “India” in its domain despite of catering to global buyers and sellers, however they have already booked a domain i.e., tradezeal.com. In April 09, an IAMAI report announced that IndiaMART has 60% market share in India’s online B2B marketplace (remember report is about Indian market not global B2B marketplace). Later, they appointed Quasar Media as its digital agency and were going to spend Rs. 25 crore on marketing.
They launched a new sourcing portal to attract more customers, gain more ranking and generate revenues. IndiaMART has been liberal and gave full access to tenders for free and the year ended with a launch of new portal – NDTVSME.com (in association with NDTV & HP). However, I won’t be able to see any new innovation in this portal but a marriage of brands.

In 2009 TradeIndia crossed a mark of one million registered users and has more than 30,00,000 global users. After this they launched a new section dedicated to China – Indian buyers can search for Chinese suppliers. TradeIndia again came in limelight with the launch of new service – DailB2B, dial 011-43117272 and get information about buyers & sellers.
Alibaba is a global leader in the B2B domain and has now stepped in India as well. Alibaba has announced that they will continue investing in Indian Market without any limits. Apart from this, Yahoo has sold 1% of its stake in Alibaba for around 150 million dollars.
In an all, year 2009 was a happening year for the B2B industry. I could see that this trend will continue in 2010 as well and we would see more developments in B2B domain.
