Government has been trying hard through its various e-Governance initiatives to hasten the execution of its policy decisions with proper transparency. The recent initiative like UID (Unique Identification) was a step in that direction so as to conjure ’e-Governance’ in India.

Business Standard reports that the government has resurrected talk on ‘e-Bharat’ a dying project at initial stage with World Bank. The Project was supposed to bring efficiency in administration management and better collection of taxes. The DIT (Department of IT) has initiated renewed talks with World Bank to see speedy execution of project by agreeing to some conditions put forward by World Bank.
The project implementation cost is in upwards of $300 million with major chunk coming from World Bank. World Bank would be managing the project along with providing consultancy to the government.
Why is the Government emphasizing on ‘e-Governance’?
It is a known fact that political and administration bureaucracy in India can delay even the vital policy decisions (best example – 3G). The e-Governance is a ticket for government to see speedy execution of its policies across the demographics. This will also help government to speedily collect tax revenues.

eGovernance can also promote public-private partnership in various sectors like IT and Telecom and Infrastructure. The UID project was a big step as it will also create massive domestic IT opportunities along with helping individuals with less paper work in future. The eGovernance projects could provide a relief to Indian IT sector languishing under US slowdown and Forex fluctuations.
The public – private partnership model could be the only winning formula for government to see success in their ‘e-Governance’ plans. The tendering of work to multiple partners could also result in better efficiency at execution.
