3G Auction In Jan 2010 – 4 Slots – Allocation In August
3G Auctions have become a butt of quite a few jokes in the telecom industry circles. One could actually make one of those ads where two young men talk about 3G launching every week and they keep doing so for weeks, years and both of them aren’t young me anymore (:D)..

But I guess that wont be required as 3G auctions are well underway to be held in January next year i.e. less than a month away. Though there were challenges on actual spectrum allocation. Also there were talks of how many and in what manner the spectrum would be allocated but all that has been put to rest.
Its seems Ratan Tata’s letter to high government officials has done the trick. Ratan Tata had expressed that all spectrum should be allocated at the same time to bidders while the earlier thought was to allocate spectrum in a phased manner based on highest bidder first.
So now all spectrum is to be allocated in August next year almost 7 months after the actual auction. There shall be 4 slots that shall be auctioned and the Government expects to raise about 25,000 crore from the auction.
So here is what to expect:
- 3G auction – Jan 2010
- 3G Allocation : August 2010
- How many players : 4 players excluding BSNL & MTNL
- Government Income: 25,000 crores expected.
So while the above can be expected I would never be too sure given the track record of 3G. Also the actual roll out may only happen from a year from now so there is still time my friend.
Whats your take on 3G? You still care about 3G?

Why such a long lag between auction and allocation? When do users actually get to start using 3g services?
Rajeev,
I couldn’t understand the fact that why can’t we bypass 3G completely and launch 4G instead.. like many other countries are doing?
