India Tops Internet Piracy List Despite Low Internet Penetration, Kolkata Police Cyber Crime Website To Be Launched

Illegal Peer-to-Peer activities galore as India ranks 8th in the world with the highest level of film piracy of any English-speaking country, finds a Motion Picture Association (MPA) and Dtechnet study based on tracking of downloading IP-addresses on P2P networks. India still ranks fourth among the largest downloaders of all times. Compared to the internet penetration in India, these figures are completely mind boggling, but not surprising!

Recently at WATBlog we covered the launch of mBit Infotech which is a peer-to-peer (P2P) mobile content platform, a joint venture between mTouche and another technology firm, VASSoft.net. And, may be as the pundits suggest P2P will consume about 90% of the world’s internet bandwidth, a situation which most ISP’s are trying to overcome.

Nevertheless, to contrast the former, Kolkata Police have planned to set up a website on cyber crime. Wipro,TCS, IBM and FSL shall contribute to this website to fight cyber crime. I wonder if too much of piracy is an equal crime they would want to fight. But, this is not the only instance where it is said that cyber criminals make more money than thieves and underworld dons.

The Government has also strengthened its stance on similar offences like spam, phishing, and breach of confidentiality. Phishing is defined as the luring of an internet user to reveal personal details (like passwords and credit card information) on a fake web page or email form pretending to come from a legitimate company.
