Last few days we have done an extensive coverage of digital commerce and the challenges it faces as pointed out by the IAMAI panels. One of the needs of digital commerce pointed out by the panelists was the need of offline players to come online. Well this seems to be happening now as Metro shoes which is a well known retailer of shoes offline has gone online.

Shoes as a segment is very popular in the west as Zappos.com the billion dollar worth ecommerce site in the US started its ecommerce foray focused completely on selling shoes.

Metro shoes accomplished the pilot phase of the shopping portal in October and is now launching the site today. The site provides collection of ladies, gents and kids footwear along with accessories. Along with online they have also launched a service dial-a-shoe where a customer can order shoes over the phone.

Metro also will provide international brands like Florsheim, Geox, Red Tape, Lee Cooper and Sports brands like Reebok, Nike and Fila along with metro’s own brands on the shopping site.

One of the points raised in the IAMAI panels on digital commerce was the immediacy of delivery in the west when it came to online shopping. One would shop and get the product delivered within a day. This was pointed out as the main concern when it came to India logistics which took almost a week to deliver the product. Even Metro shoes has it mentioned in their FAQs that “It takes 7 working days to deliver your products all across India.”

Now this is where Indian ecommerce players needs to work hard if Digital commerce needs to grow. Unless we solve these issues it will take  a long time before we see the first Zappos.com of  India.

Correction Rajeev, products dont get delivered within a day, the fastest you can do is overnight shipping, and is charged a premium.

What the panel member is trying to say is that the order is processed and shipped within a day.

  2. I second that.Even in west, its not one day delivery.,for that they charge more.its usually 3-5 working days.(Groceries as exception)

I should also point, article title “comparing metro to zappos” is bit too far. Zappos is famed for its exceptional customer service.

  3. Thanks pavan for your thoughts – While i agree on the comparison bit.. We need to benchmark against the best dont we?

  4. What happens when the shoe bites? While I think it’s important for a business to offer its product and services across all channels – Expectaions must be set at the onset to minimize heartache… A suggestion to Metro Shoes, would have been, maybe only as a graduation to e-com, Pick your shoe online (maybe monogram it?) and pick it up at a Metro Shoe location near you…

The sales staff at these shops do a wonderful job of ensuring that you get out with your feet decorated, and that cannot be replicated online…

  5. Chodu bhagat – Zappos sells all brands, unlike Metros which sells its own private label brands. And with shoes comfort & trial matters, specially in Indian context.Online kya Metros ka baap trial karwayega?

  6. Pls read the post. Metro sells quite a few brands as well. With regards to trying the shoes out I agree with you.
