eGully Another Fern In Ecommerce Basket – How Long Will It Persist?

With the recession slowly phasing out and with the increase in user spending capability, many new e-commerce startups are trying to make their mark in the yet to be harnessed Indian e-commerce market. According to the recent survey by Visa, the average expenditure of Asian citizen is around $2066 in a year and in India more than 22% of this share is used for booking travel tickets and hotels. Still Indian citizens are slightly reluctant in shopping online and prefer to shop in markets. But the rising internet penetration and evolving mindset is injecting some hope in various ecommerce platforms.
Egully.com is one such recent addition in the ecommerce bandwagon and they are trying to establish themselves in the retail market segment focusing primarily on books and electronic purchases. This segment has proven to be highly rewarding in various developed e-commerce hubs like US, UK etc. People are not hesitant in buying books online as books are generally sold after authors name, publication name and reviews. So for users who want to buy a legal copy, shopping online or shopping in market does not make much of a difference and additional offers like free shipping, discounts (which eGullly is already providing) will motivate people to order from the site instead of from buying from market.
Inspite of large number of e-commerce sites in india like ebay.co.in, indiatimes .com, e-commerce hasn’t picked up as per the expectations. These sites are not able to attract a huge customer base because they try to focus on all segments which proves tricky and people don’t want soo many things at once. Various other e-commerce sites like ShopCorn are trying to get a piece of Indian market pie by providing some innovative features like integrating social networking (chat, discussion) with shopping but they were also not able to build a huge customer base. It seems that time may be little rough for Egully.com as there are many other players already in the same field.
In my view e-commerce industry will take a good amount of time to make a footprint in India and only the consistent players will be able to win the race.
