Acer , a well known name in the personal computer market is trying to increase its presence in the mobile handset market by launching 2-4 Android based handsets in Dec 2009 and will join the Android race in India started by HTC and Samsung. Acer has already entered into the Indian market with 8 mobile handsets running Microsoft Windows Mobile but was not able to get a lot of buyers for them till now.

Acer to Launch Android Based phones
Now it is trying to appeal to a different audience by launching Android based handsets. Most of the Acer Android mobile handsets will be touch screen and priced between 10k to 20k. I guess nobody needs  anymore introduction on Android after WatBlog’s extensive coverage of Android. It seems Acer has struck the right chord with its plan to launch sub 20k handsets as a lot of people (including me ) want to try Android handsets and price is the biggest barrier. iPhone paid the price of being ultra expensive in Indian markets but android may not suffer the same fate going forward.

As of today most of the Android phones in the market currently are in 25K+ range which gives iphone the preference as when one can have iphone for the same price with all coolness and hype why would somebody go for an Android with much less tested OEM hardware and less brand/resale value.

Along with other cool factors of Android the most important driver is it being open source and free but the same is not reflected in the current handsets as most of the Android handsets are priced quite high. Even though most of the OEM’s and mobile manufacturers are almost spending nothing (compared to Microsoft Mobile or Symbian) on the mobile software they  are still not willing to pass the benefits on to the consumers.

In my view Acer can get the early mover advantage with the launch sub 20k Android handsets and in my view sub 10k android handsets are the need of the day. I had used an Acer Mobile with Wifi etc ( having windows mobile OS) priced around 11k so how cool will it be to get an Android phone with all the functionality including WiFi for less than 10K. If Acer want to make its presence in the mobile market, low priced Android phones can be their lucky charm.
