Its east meets west as far as this story is concerned. Tripadvisor which is a global review sites on travel has tied up with Indian travel giant IRCTC (which powers a large chunk of travel ecommerce in India) for  content collaboration in the online travel space in India. This is a big deal for Tripadvisor as it will give the global site exposure to the millions of travellers that flock to the IRCTC site.]

I have personally used tripadvisor and can say that they do have quite a comprehensive review database of all Indian places, restaurants and hotels.

Sharat Dhall, Managing Director, TripAdvisor India stated that their Indian userbase is growing and currently Tripadvisor garners  more than 1.5 million monthly unique Indian visitors.

Though the commercials of the deal aren’t disclosed Id like to believe that this partnership isn’t a non commercial one and tripadvisor is surely paying IRCTC for giving them the space on their website. Why do I say this? Well IRCTC’s estimated gross annual sales of Rs.3400 crore constitutes 1/3rd of the total ecommerce industry worth Rs.9000 crores in India. It has been witnessing a healthy annual growth of 100% in no. of tickets sold through online inititatives which stands at 45million tickets FY08.
