India’s Internet Penetration Grows By 17% In A Year – Comscore Study
The Indian Internet space suffers from statistics problem as different research agencies predict a different number of the total internet penetration in India. IGF statistics last year pegged it at 80 million Indian Internet users and then there was IAMAI which pegged it at 46 million way back in 2007 which got reduced to 39 odd million in 2008.
So Indian Internet has been suffering from this problem. Now Comscore has announced in its latest report that the Indian internet penetration has grown by 17% year.
Check their table below:
As the last line suggests comscore numbers do not include cybercafe or mobile traffic. Mobile traffic would be sizable given 500 million plus phones and about 5-10% of that can be assumed to be GPRS subscribers and hence a rough estimate of 30 million mobile internet users can be pegged and add to that cyber cafe access. But again all this could over lap as well in terms of unique users.
What is sad though that India is 1/8th the size of the Internet penetration in China. It seems like we have a long way to go. Part of the effort needs to be on the access side with broadband and wireless broadband getting a push and part of it needs to be in providing quality services and content. I do believe that a lot of investment needs to be made in both people and in technology if internet has to penetrate India .
