After BPO Agony Aunts and automobile companies, we have even shoe manufacturers looking to spread their wings online. One of the leading shoe brand Red Tape comes out for sale online with not just footwear and leather accessories, they also offer other apparel thereunder. Manufacturer Mirza International is the first shoe company to have their own online store which includes sales and delivery via courier. “In five years, we want to take it to 50 per cent of our sale,” says Director of Mirza International Tauseef Mirza.

Apart from Red Tape there are other players already existing in the Shoe Biz, the only difference being they have a wide range of brands and apparel lined up for sale. So has Red Tape bought their idea? To optimize space utilization, they have begun to stock readymade garments and accessories like wallets and belts in the stores. These are sold under the Red Tape brand, though they are sourced from third-party manufacturers. Sunglasses, watches and fragrances could follow in the days to come which is a challenge for other accessories and apparel portals online.

Shoe sites like BigShoeBazaar.com have almost all the brands available in the market today under one roof. Bata, Converse, Hush Puppies, Lee Cooper, Lotto, Nike, Adidas and so on who wish to save their retailer margins either tie-up with the portal or spend it the saved amount on delivery. Red Tape looks at the similar picture ensuring sales growth and keeping off any third parties. Currently, the premium end of the shoe market, in which Red Tape operates, is worth Rs 1,000 crore per annum. Among the branded ones, Red Tape is a leading player with annual sales of around Rs 80 crore.

Mirza International also have other brands that are sold overseas, in fact as reported by afaqs most of their sales depend on their brands abroad. Hence to strengthen their business in India they apparently need more visibility which can happen either through a promising brand ambassador or through more outlets in larger stores like Lifestyle and Shoppers Stop where they already exist. They endorsed Salman Khan few years back which was a great success, but talking about online credibility they need to provide a popular range of apparel that can entice their audience.
