Second Life’s Virtual World Goes Enterprise

Linden Lab, the makers of second life has launched an open beta of  Second Life Enterprise. This would see second life being played under the close networks of companies. Till now second life has created many controversies regarding the flaunting of precious business information in virtual world.

The Second life Enterprise will now allow companies to embrace virtual world under close quarters of its wall by paying nominal fees to Linden Lab. The companies will have to fork out anywhere between $55,000 for buying a secure server running the Second life world.

This means now companies can train their employees or even provide virtual entertainment without spilling beans to the outside world. Linden labs has been working on this product since 2008 when it tied up with IBM for a similar partnership. The company would also come up with an app store for its enterprise customers named Second Life Work Marketplace.

This product will have lot of ramifications for employee trainee programs as companies can leverage the virtual place to train and instigate obligatory regulations on to their employees. This will also open up a whole lot of outsourcing opportunities as companies would be looking at replicating their real-life office spaces on Second life.

This enterprise version will see de-cluttering of enterprise audience from open virtual space to closed wall. This certainly augers well for current users for whom Second Life is a virtual game and they’d like to see less corporate jamming up their way.

In US, companies like IBM and many defense contractors have been using this solution. In India companies like Infosys, TCS, L & T might show interest in implementing this solution as they handle & train a very high amount of manpower and by training those employees in virtual and entertaining manner could prove financially accretive for these companies.
