Twitter since its inception has seen many uses for its service. It is used by hedge fund managers to keep a tab on news flow and by companies at large to send updates to employees & investors. It is also used to manage brands and products reputation online amongst several things.

Twitter is yet to find a business model on its own but in the meantime it has helped many other businesses to prosper. Even small blog owners depend on it to get traffic to their blogs. In all Twitter is no longer just a conversational tool it has become more sort of a update sender & forum tool specially due to its viral & real-time features.

In latest series of Twitter adoption, Indian B-schools have started embracing Twitter that includes sending updates to students and aspirants regarding the placements and admissions.

IIM Calcutta & Bangalore is among the B-school using Twitter platform to send out frequent updates. IIM bangalore is even using Twitter to send out campus-related news and information. Other IIM’s are not far behind as they too use platform’s like Twitter, blogs to reach out to targeted users.

IIM Lucknow based Credence Capital has also embraced Online social platforms to increase Investing awareness amongst Indians. Other B-Schools like XLRI Jamshedpur has been using Micro blogging network to give details regarding current batch to help recruiters get know-how of inside-campus activities.

Why are companies and institutions adopting Twitter?

Virality:

Twitter is way to much viral even above many social networks. It is also finding its way into mainstream Indian users thus increasing its potential importance to Indian institutions.

Real-Time:

Twitter pushes out updates in real-time and as such its searches are real-time too. This real-time nature helps companies to send out updates which they are sure would reach their followers immediately.

Conversation (showcasing transparency):

A small update could lead to a quality conversation on Twitter regarding the brand or product. This in turn helps the companies to showcase their transparent nature in hearing out its customers a.k.a. followers.

Creating a Twitter profile hardly takes any money (nearly nothing). It is also very simple to send out updates thus not even requiring professional manpower to do the needful.

Marketing:

Twitter is not just a customer forum but a good tool to leverage the marketing abilities of an institution. Dell reportedly earned millions from sales procuring from its Twitter page.
