Google has been experimenting with search options ever since it added the sidebar on its results page. Google has now added Page previews option on to its sidebar.

Page preview allows users to see more snippets of text than just few lines. It also shows preview of the image on right side of each search results. The search images seems to bundle Google images library results with web search results rather than giving out recent screenshot. Although this feature is full of bugs as few images misses out on search pages it could still be called a good experiment.

Google also needs to change the layout of this visual search by putting small images on the left of search results as done by many Firefox plugins.

Which One is better?

Google Image Preview:

Search Preview Plug-in:

Google seems to have realized that making a search on its search engine is a two second affair but checking the correct content takes more time specially due to high page sizes. Thus this preview functionality will allow its users to filter out search results which they are looking for.

Microsoft too launched Visual search for Bing few months ago which seems to have elicited response from Google. Till now users looking for visual search had to rely on Firefox and other browser plug-ins but making it available in search results sidebar could be boon for searchers as and when this feature gets added functionality.

Google may loose serious ad revenues if this features was to enabled by default on Google search pages so Google at best will be providing it as a search additions and will looking at response garnered from searchers to make any move in merging the functionality to default search.

Therefore it might be too early to say that Google is looking at visual search as a future play but nothing can be ignored looking at the way Google spear-heads the search revolution.

  1. I think the Google Page Preview is the new revolution in search industry. It give’s all the information about site in short. This will help people land on the page they want eventually saving great deal of time. I don’t understand why they have delayed adding such functionality despite of being king in search industry. Wonder when it will be live???

In comparison the with the above two I think Search preview Plug-in: is the better one.

  2. Its already Live…..
Go to Google search page and in sidebar select page previews at the bottom.
