Content Sharing Deal Between Facebook And MySpace – Can They Make It Work?
Just in the morning, we covered as to how Google stopped the migration of email-id’s from Orkut to Facebook by excluding the email-id’s from the CSV file, in order to preserve the privacy of their consumers. All that meant was that Google doesn’t want its users to go away with Orkut completely. As the statistics speak for themselves, Orkut isn’t doing any good recently and Facebook is on a high. With Orkut trying to block Facebook in every possible way to emerge as the best social networking site, it has become difficult for MySpace to compete in an already tough market. Amidst such circumstances, Facebook and MySpace found a new way to handle things.
It has been reported that Facebook is in talks with MySpace in a content partnership deal. Now, this is simply big. If the deal works out fine, it could just be the end of Orkut.

From the Facebook’s point of view, Twitter has been a big big problem for them and with the search engine giants – Google and Microsoft making their deal through with Twitter for its content, Facebook was not in any of the good positions.
On the other hand, MySpace has been losing its users to Facebook at a very rapid rate. Early in the year, it was overtaken by Facebook as per the number of unique visitors every month. The main reason being – The Music Content Social Network has been the same since its advent in 2003.
Under such circumstances, my guess is MySpace is doing the right thing.

As the Facebook CEO said, “Facebook is focusing on building the best technology which helps people share content, while at MySpace they are focussing on more a content-led strategy. We would like to have their content, as we already do with many other sites, shared across our network because it is good for our users.”
When asked how the partnership could work, Ms Sandberg explained, “Hypothetically speaking, as nothing has been formally arranged yet, MySpace could become a Facebook Connect partner – which would allow people to share content they liked from MySpace with their Facebook network.”
With every social networking site doing its very best to increase its popularity, it would be interesting to see how Microsoft’s Live Planet, Google’s Orkut or Twitter will react and will they emerge with something new to take on Facebook? What’s your take on this move?
