In what can seem like an ironic twist of fate, just when Yahoo came calling to India with the “It’s You!” campaign, Indians seem to have moved elsewhere. A new report from online analytics platform Vizisense claims that Yahoo Mail has lost its leadership position to Gmail in its latest rankings in India.
According to the report, 18 million unique users visited Gmail for the month of August; 1.2 million more than Yahoo Mail. Rediff mail is at a distant third with 6.25 million users.
The report has not been something out of the blue. Gmail has threatened the position of Yahoo for a long time and while Yahoo has still been able to hold on to its leadership in the email market in many countries, its growth rate vis-a-vis Gmail has left a lot to be desired. Also, India is among the biggest markets for Google in terms of dominance (three out of top five websites in India are owned by Google according to Alexa).
However, Yahoo still is the leading web portal in India, and with the recently introduced design changes coupled with the aggressive marketing campaign, it sure has the potential to bounce back. Add to this the growing exodus of users from Orkut to Facebook which would mean a lesser need for users to maintain a Gmail account.
Do you think Gmail’s top spot is an abberation so Yahoo will be able to bounce back or do you think that this is an indication of the future? Please do let us know in the comments.
