Diwali Shopping To Bring Gold Rush For eCommerce – PayPal Survey
The festive season is here again with a bang, as shopping freaks are swooping up already. Where do you plan to go shopping this holiday season? To a nearby store that offers Buy 2 Get 2 Free or just look around online for better deals? PayPal an online payment site conducted a survey to find out how good this holiday season is going to be not only for manufacturers and marketers but also for shoppers and bystanders!
The regular anticipation during a holiday season is said to be higher this year, as 45% of people are expected to spend more than what they did last year for their Diwali shopping. I am sure the women will go for the kill! The PayPal Survey forecasts, to an average each Diwali shopper will end up spending around Rs 9836/- ($213). Glowing figures, aren’t they? Gift cards, vouchers, household commodities, health and beauty and entertainment are on top of the list. The surveyalso says that around 70% of Indians are looking groovier this season as compared to last year.
Some intimidating findings of the survey also include, Indians are the savviest when it comes to online shopping among four countries across South East Asia. They are expected to avoid shops and would prefer buying from home. 75% intend on to shop online. They do so because 75% think that it saves them valuable time, 65% do it to avoid the crowds while 60% responders said that they find a wider range of items to access online. Now is that right!
Well, the problems for the implementation stay -
- A probable lack of awareness
- International websites need to include the features
- Technical difficulties, glitches in connection, traffic handling etc.
- Inconvenience – which is a major reason.
Most people avoid inconvenience as much as possible. I personally prefer visiting the stores after some research online, also Mum won’t let me trust the online shopping mode. Hence, an extra layer of authorisation, with an extra set of numbers to remember could only increase irritation among users. They may buy a gift online, compare prices and mostly gather information through the internet. Rarely will you find someone choosing the online mode before the various formats ofretail in India offers.
With the rate of Indians using credit cards dropping, a measure like this is probably not very wise. On the other hand PayPal Southeast Asia and India General Manager Mario Shiliashki said, “Many online merchants will be gearing up for the festive period and encouragingly it looks like spending is due to rise in India.”
