RCom Introduces Universal Plan, Local And STD calls At 50 paise
Indian Telecom Users are burdened with numerous plans and hidden tariffs. Reliance Communication seems to have adapted new strategy to take care of such anomalies and thus would be charging similar voice charges for both Local and STD calls.

The plan from Rcom would entail its GSM and CDMA Mobile subscribers to buy the tariff package and enjoy all domestic calls at 50 paise per minute. The voice charges are on the lower side as the average call charges currently ranges from 40 paise to 1.5 rupee for both local and std calls. The plan would also be available for existing post-paid and pre-paid users. The company would also provide SMS at the same charge of 50 paise.
Existing Prepaid subscriber would need to buy a special tariff voucher worth Rs 48 whereas post-paid customers can go for this plan at a monthly rent of Rs 99. The major benefit would be for STD callers as they would be able to enjoy cheaper call rates. The company through this price reduction wants to penetrate deeply into the GSM Subscriber base in India.
RCom plans to replace all of its 265 mobile plans with this universal plan and has thus put all other tariff plans on hold. All existing plans would continue to serve existing users for next six months. The company thus wants to remove bottlenecks in billing and transparency related issues.
WATBlog earlier reported that telecom tariff would continue to see decline even though India has one of the lowest telecom tariffs in the world. The major obstruction in absurdly lower tariff has been the termination charges levied, providing level playing field to public telcos.
Change in Billing Norms – More cost effective and transparent?
Telecom sector has been witnessing a change in billing norms and has seen an influx of various new innovations. Earlier DoCoMo introduced ‘One second billing’ which soon became a rage and helped the company in attracting new subscribers.
‘One second billing’ is also being recommended by TRAI as call dropping problems have deteriorated from earlier levels. Thus changing to this billing system will help in reigning customer dissatisfaction although that may be a disastrous for telcos bottom-line.
The introduction of universal plan may not have much rub-off effect as subscribers need to fork out money in initial to benefit from such lower charges. This move altogether signals that many telcos would make their tariff plans more simplified and transparent as competition and Future MNP implementation might disfigure their prospectus for growth.
