Email has been the sole strength for blackberry to penetrate into the enterprise mobile segment.Gmail just handled that power to other platforms by introducing ‘Push Mail’ support for iPhone ,iPod touch and Windows Mobile based devices
What is ‘Push Mail’?
Push mail is used to describe e-mail systems that provide an “always-on” capability, in which new e-mail is instantly and actively transferred (pushed) as it arrives by the mail server to the e-mail client. E-mail clients include smartphones and, less strictly, IMAP personal computer mail applications. source-wikipedia

Google Sync Now supports Gmail too
Google earlier this year started providing support for Gmail Contacts and Google Calendar by introducing Google Sync. This time it has started the sync feature for mails too even though Google already provides Gmail push on Android and RIM BlackBerry devices via the Google Apps Connector for BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
Google Sync in a sense works with your phone’s native e-mail and other applications(for calendar & contacts) so there’s no additional software needed.
Google sync uses push technology, which means that any changes you make to your calendar or contacts from the browser or phone will be reflected on your device within minutes. The synchronization happens automatically over the air, without having to manually sync your phone. The connection being always ‘On’ thus keeps the information information updated. Now mail support would be a major addition to this service.

Get Google Sync on your phone -
- To try Google Sync, visit m.google.com/sync from your computer. Choose your phone OS and proceed through instructions given on the right side.
You can also check the instructions to activate Google Sync service on iPhone/iPod Touch, here and Windows Mobile users can check here.
If you’re already using Google Sync, learn how to enable Gmail sync.
Few points to ponder:
- Google Sync uses Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync Protocol for setting up Google Sync on the device. Also, ActiveSync supports only one profile so if you have one account activated on Microsoft Exchange on your phone, second one can’t be added.
- Backup the existing data for it’s likely that the data might be wiped out.
The most needful will be the official support of this service from Telco’s just like a usage plans for blackberry to facilitate more uses of Push mail on other devices than just Blackberry.
