MingleBox Launches Free CAT Portal For MBA Aspirants – Can They Make It Big?
2009 has not been a favorable year for Indian social networks. With the terrific growth of Facebook, each of these small time social networks have faced the heat, despite how they had positioned themselves. MingleBox claim to be India’s number one education network connecting students and young professionals. A look at the Alexa ranking shows a trend that is popular across the Indian social network arena – a fall. Have the students and young professions started looking elsewhere for their e-ducational needs?
MingleBox has recently launched a new section for MBA aspirants in the country. Called e-CAT Prep, this is a free resource for people writing CAT; the MBA entrance exam conducted by IIM and which is endorsed by several other B-Schools. e-CAT Prep is basically three things – course materials to help you refresh yourself of the various subjects, mock tests that users can attempt and a forum for users to discuss MBA related stuff.

This is an intelligent move by MingleBox. With the CAT exam having moved online from the traditional paper based tests, there is palpable tension among MBA aspirants about gaining sufficient test-practice before they hit the D-day. By providing an online mock test resource for free, MingleBox have launched a viral, something that can quickly get them a lot of takers. If played right, this could actually turn tables in terms of gaining new users.
From my perspective, that would mean become the largest free repository for online mock tests, so much so CAT aspirants turn to MingleBox every other day to take tests. An average MBA aspirant takes CAT coaching for 2-3 years and with more and more people taking CAT with every passing year, this is a segment that can actually mean a lot in the long run.
I have not researched into the quality of the resources myself. If you are a MingleBox user yourself, do let us know how good is the quality of the resource and if you can think this can actually help them in turning things around. The challenge for minglebox is how it plans to compete with the likes of Pagalguy.com which is probably the leading player as a community for MBA aspirants and has catered to this community for over 5 years now.
