Facebook Crosses 300 Million Users, Makes Money And Also Introduces Prototype

Facebook today announced that its crossed 300 million users across the globe. It also stated in a press release to WATBlog that it has become cashflow positive last quarter even though they expected to achieve the same by 2010. Quite a landmark achievement if you ask us. Finally one can say that social networking is making money!

facebook 300 million

300 million users are a lot but what’s even more interesting is that its taken just about 300 facebook engineers to reach to that number also less than 4 years in time. Facebook in its release promises that this is just the beginning and there is lots more they plan to offer. We for starters they also announced Prototype which is simple words can be called as Facebook’s Labs (like google labs).

So what is Facebook Prototype?

Facebook Prototypes let facebook share the experimentation going on inside the walls of Facebook with the rest of the world. Users will be able to test any of the products and features facebook launches as Facebook Prototypes and then provide feedback directly to those of who built them. To access Prototypes, visit the Application Directory and filter by “Prototypes.”

Current listings include apps like Desktop Notifications, Similar posts, Enhanced Events Mails, Photo Tag Search and Recent comment filter.

Facebook seems to gearing up to take on competition thats as big and bulky as google and as small but swift and deadly as twitter and its taking initiatives both on the product and the revenue end to counter these threats. Lets see how it fares going forward.
