A recent comscore report suggests that Google properties dominate heavily in Indian Market so much so that in some categories Google is the only player of consequence, commanding huge market share.
Google in India – The Giant Rules
Picture the following statistics for India:
- Google Sites accounted for 88.4% of all searches conducted
- Orkut accounted for 68.2 percent of all time spent on social networks
- Google Maps accounted for 63.9% of all time spent on mapping products
- YouTube accounted for 82.8%.
- Even with competition from WordPress, Blogger accounted for 47.6% of all time spent on blogs
- And finally Gmail accounted 46.8 percent of time spent on emails
Check the global statistics of time spent on google sites below.. India ranks second highest with 28.9% of all internet time being spent on Google properties. Brazil is the only other market higher than India.
% of time spent on Google Sites
- Worldwide - 9.4%
- Brazil – 29.8%
- India - 28.9%
- Ireland – 15.9%
- Singapore - 14.3%
- Portugal – 13.3%
- South Africa – 12.9%
- Mexico – 12.8%
- Italy – 12.4%
- Austria - 12.1%
- Denmark – 12.1%
The above statistic does suggest that localization and local products/content hasn’t quite taken off. Also the fact that google itself is quite aggressive on vernacularization of content means that it will stay ahead of the pack as far as providing local content to Indian users is concerned. It remains to be seen who challenges google’s position in India. Will it be Microsoft with Bing and Facebook? Or with time will Indian content publishers and products be able to challenge the Giant? What’s Your Take?
