Chandamama is a popular children magazine in India which was acquired by Geodesic in 2007. Geodesic has recently announced the launch of Chanamama in Kannada, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil and Hindi languages.
Prashant Mulekar, Executive Director, Chandamama points out that these portals are targetted both at kids and at loyal readers. He says “We have launched the websites in regional languages to meet two important objectives. For children to experience their favourite Chandamama stories on the Internet in their native language and also help loyal readers enjoy the magazine’s content online to re-live those old memories.”
The portals plans to add games as well as online shopping and will have an archive section for users that want to browse through older issues of the magazine.
Chandamama is one of India’s oldest magazine and was launched in 1947 and in those times the modes of entertainment and enlightenment for kids were few. In today’s age of video games and computer games it had a tough time competing for mind space. What has got me even more curious is do kids read regional language on internet?
As far as my knowledge goes regional language uptake in India is in anycase low and on top of the if you look at most SEC A and B kids they would be going to english medium schools. This move looks more targetted at old readers who want to revisit their childhood. Would like someone to enlighten us on this move by Chandamama and what is the market size of online kids in India?

Do you guys any clue as to what market size mean ?
This is comics for children, go and google the stats as to howmany kids
do games and comics online in US.
Chandamama is the probably oldest comics in children in India, as you can figure out, comics will always have universal appeal, so they have great future if they can get great all of their content online and add some interactive elements with great new interface ..
Look at disney.com or children site and look at the stats …
Stop writing great things about what’s successful, nobody reads them anymore, b/c they already use them. Chandama like sites, which are mainly content based will make money faster than our usual hyped up concepts and will have worldwide appeal
I like No Way.
Dudes @ Watblog stop being on the bandwagon of US based technologies and stop rehashing the news what can be found on millions of sites worldwide, instead focus on Indian startups give them the exposure they need, of course you can be critical but, don’t kill their spirits ..
Just look at this way, you are in business of writing about others success or ideas, that’s not a unique talent, so remember that …
I still like your blog
Cheers -
Thanks @I Like No Way – We love feedback.. Also We aren’t covering that much of US technologies besides for Google, Facebook, Twitter which in anycase are big in Indian scene. As far as startups is concerned we have a dedicated day i.e. saturday for covering startups. Even otherwise we bring startup news on a daily basis regarding tie ups etc. We do more than 6-8 stories a day and even do interviews regularly. Im sure everyone can find some value for them in the stories we do. But having said that we shall continue to work upon the suggestions you have given here.
