The hot trends on Twitter pretty much seem to sum up the mood of the Twitterverse. So, as I’m writing this, I can gauge that people are animatedly talking about ‘Snow Leopard’, ‘Jay Z’ and ‘Opera 10′. Now, can you predict what will be hot tomorrow?
That’s what Pretweeting is all about. It is a nice addictive app that lets you earn virtual money for gauging the popularity of words down in the immediate future. For example, if I think ‘Federer‘ is going to be talked about in the near future, I can purchase the word and make profit by selling it at a high; and that’s as the US Open 2009 progresses.
If you are into stock trading and like the game of predicting, this is for you. Pretweeting offers every account $10,000 of virtual currency to start with and periodically updates the prices on every word that is used in Twitter based on the frequency of its usage. So, if you can correctly predict the popularity of words, you can make a (virtual) killing!
Whilst it sounds like a fun app for now, it can go on to have a revenue model. If you remember Predictify, a service that let you earn real cash for predicting. Pretweeting could take an inspiration from there too. Predictify though hasn’t made the cut and shall be closing down shortly, but the website did show that there are companies willing to pay to know user’s opinion on what will happen in the future.
Alternately, Pretweeting could simply make people make real money by investing real cash. But then, that would make it open to scammers who are simply going to buy low-priced words, use automated twitter accounts to parrot the same word a million times on Twitter, increase the value of these words on Pretweeting and finally sell it off at a high to make cash. So, that is not truly viable.
But till then, enjoy the game of predicting while it lasts. I have purchased Federer, Nadal and Andy for the upcoming week. What are you buying?
