Yet Another Search Engine In The Making – But You’ll Like This!

When I read this news article in the morning today, I was wondering if the search engine market was getting a little too crowded now. How many more search engines do we need when close to three fourths of mankind is using just one, Google?

This new search engine might not become as popular as a Google or even a Bing anytime soon, but it has given a new direction that makes me think if this actually fits the definition of ’search engine’ better than Google or Bing – the decision engine.

curiouscase of THE Search Engine

Launched by IIT-Bombay in association with Hewlett Packard, this new search engine shall work on finding the actual answer to the question asked and not merely provide links to the websites that it deems most relevant. In other words, if I were to search for “maximum speed of a Mercedez-Benz”, Google shall be providing me with links to websites about Merc. But this search engine will do the additional job of filtering through those website links and provide me with a quantitative answer to the question.

Sounds definitely interesting, doesn’t it?. It also reminds you of Wolfram Alpha, the computational search engine that was launched with much fanfare a few months back but has fizzled out since then. But unlike Wolfram Alpha which uses an internal computational engine to process information, this yet-to-be-named engine makes use of knowledge amassed from indexing through the millions of annotation links that are referred from the various pages of Wikipedia to find an answer.

It is unclear if and when the search engine will be available to the public, but the head of the project, Prof. Soumen Chakrabarti has said that they shall be releasing their search API to key research partners and universities by the end of the year.  I am unsure how much of an impact such a search engine will create to the existing market. But it sure provides an indication of what an ideal search engine should be like – provide the user with an answer and not a search engine optimized website link.

  1. I was going through Mr soumen chakrabarti’s webpage. He seems to be a proudy, high-handed and offensive kind of person.

    Pls remove his webpage link.
such people bring shame to us.

  2. Looks like the time for decision engines to make a mark has come. People seem to want more filtered and precise information from their searches. Hope this IIT incubated decision engine helps us search faster, better and smarter.
