Top 5 Popular Twitter Clients – Which One Do You Use?
The media space, both online and offline have been obsessed about Twitter for quite some time now – be it in anointing it as the next big thing on Internet or ruing about the service being down every second week. That being the obsession with lots of people, it is interesting to know how people actually access Twitter. Most of the users, including yours truly access the website pretty much the ‘no brainer’ way – by typing in twitter.com on the web browser. But a lot of Twitterers access the website through client applications.
If you are yet another casual Twitterer like I am, and are not too sure about which clients to try out, here is a list of the five most popular Twitter clients studied by an online research company, Rapleaf. If you already use one of these, please let us know which one is your favourite.
TweetDeck : If you are following several hundreds of people on Twitter, a client application like TweetDeck is a must. Separate all your tweets in separate columns like @Replies, Direct Messages, Friends, etc. Besides, you can create your own custom groups so you can segregate your 1000 ‘friends’ into the group they deserve to be in. All in all, this is the app you need to go for if following people on Twitter is an obsession. 4% of all tweets are from TweetDeck.
Twitterfon : This is the second most popular Twitter client. Twitterfon is built for those who need to access Twitter from their iPhone or iPod Touch. The USP of the service, as their site claims, is the simplicity of use. The app also comes with a PRO version that provides an ad-free interface with extra functionalities.
TwitterBerry : This needs no explanation. TwitterBerry is for Twitter access over the BlackBerry. Pretty interesting that 2% of all tweets come through this application.
Tweetie : Tweetie is yet another popular twitter client which can be accessed from desktop, Mac, iPhone and iPod Touch. This provides you additional features like navigating reply chains and viewing images from Twicpic (another Twitter app). Tweetie costs $2.99 for the iPhone and $19.95 to register on Mac.
Twitterific : I am sorry, but this yet another app to access Twitter from iPhone and the Mac. I do not see anything additional that Twitterific offers which is not offered by one of the iPhone Twitter clients discussed. A premium ad-free version is available for $9.99
What this study from Rapleaf shows is that there are three basic ways to use Twitter – If you do not have too many followers and are not an obsessive Twitterer yourself (so are 65% of the people out there), the Twitter website is the one for you. If you have too many followers and you use a desktop, head to TweetDeck. And finally, if you need help from your mobile phones – an iPhone or a Blackberry, use one of the several mobile apps out there.

I use UberTwitter on my BlackBerry (it passed Twitterberry as the most-used BB Twitter client recently), and Tweetdeck on my netbook.
I started twittering only because of Twitterfon

Hello…
iPhone and Blackberry are not the only mobiles people use, there are Symbian and WinMo based phones in this world too. Where did you leave Gravity, the most popular mobile application based on Symbian platform. Your article tasted like an Indian food without salt.
The list was compiled by Rapleaf (as mentioned in the blog post – http://blog.rapleaf.com/rapleaf-study-on-popularity-of-twitter-clients/) and not by us. So well, it was not meant to be ‘Indian food’ in the first place
For some strange reasons TweetDeck doesnt work on my PC. I am using Seesmic Desktop, and i think its cool.
What can twitter do for you?
