TCS Gen Web 2.0 Survey Claims 99% of Delhi Students Have Mobile Phone Access
An interesting survey conducted by Tata Consultancy Services, India’s biggest IT services company has thrown up some interesting statistics. The study, called the TCS Generation Web 2.0 survey was conducted across 12 of the biggest cities in India – Ahmedabad, Bhubaneshwar, Cochin, Coimbatore, Lucknow, Pune, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi and Chennai. 14,000 students between the ages of 12-18 years were surveyed to understand what’s in the mind of these affluent students in the metros and tier II cities.
The survey shows that an overwhelming 71% of students had access to Internet and 80% of them had access to mobile phones. A striking 99% of students in Delhi had access to a mobile phone while in Kolkata the corresponding number was 90%. The highest use of personal computers comes from Delhi and Bangalore; 77% of students from both the cities having answered in the affirmative. However, Chennai records the highest use of Internet from home.
What is striking about the whole survey is the level of awareness about web 2.0. Here are some stats for starters:
- 93% of the students were aware of social networking sites like Orkut and Facebook
- 63% of the students spent at least an hour online everyday
- 46% of the students access news online
- 66% of students in Bangalore were active on Blogging and social networking
- 39% of students nationally were active on blogging and social networking
- Wikipedia is a preferred source of information over library. Cochin records the highest usage of library at a measly 14%
From the perspective of Internet marketers, one thing is clear – there is a growing market for products that sell by ‘pester power’ online. It is high time these marketers realize this segment and use it effectively. Now TV is not the only marketing medium parents have to be worried about!
