Best Tutorials to Learn How to Make Your Own Facebook App

As far as principles of engagement go, it is debatable whether Facebook applications still hold the same pull that they had when Facebook hit the scene. Then poking wasn’t just a funny app but a phenomenon that almost defined the website and its image to many. And as brands continue to explore and get their feet wet with applications, they’re sure to engage a lot of Facebook developer hands to get what they want.

From that perspective, we thought it would be a good idea to share some resources from the web that have been found useful to that extent. Also maybe it would come in handy when you vie for the mega bucks that the Facebook India Developer Contest offers. Provided the Facebook session at Proto this weekend hasn’t already given you a lot of ideas that is.

Get Started:

I found the following 3 besides the obvious Facebook Developer page useful in terms of approach, simplicity and depth:

Building a Good App

Getting started with the basics is only 1 part of the job really, making a good successful app is what sets a developer apart. And that requires knowing more than good clean code. Of course it also some times moves beyond the realm of what your Facebook app is about (which is critical) and how you go about making one. Take whether one should use PHP 5 or PHP 4 for instance. These three articles should be of good help on these fronts.

From whatever little I have read and done with Facebook applications, these have covered most of the questions that needed answers. And therefore, they seem comprehensive enough to cover most aspect of app development.

Besides the technical know how however, it would greatly help any developer to understand segments in web interface and engagment that drive viral behaviour. Many times it need not be the end result itself that makes people want to share and share a lot, rather it can be the whole process of how the app works that makes it cool enough for many people to oblige and install in their profiles. Take the graffiti app for instance, the end results are usually pointless scribbles that hardly hold a lot of artistic value (on a general note) however, it is one of the most successful FB app ever.

So like in the case of any programming language, Facebook apps require the additional knowledge of understanding people’s sharing habits and how things go viral on the web.

Also I think this would be a great opportunity to invite any Facebook app developer to post their views, experiences, or maybe a tutorial itself. Mail us your guest post and we will have it featured here (provided it fits well).
