It’s Not Just Portals: Now Twitter Decides to Revamp its Home Page and Launches Twitter 101

According to this post on All Things Digital, Twitter has co-founder Biz Stone has  claimed that the microblog will soon have a new home page. The move though totally unrelated follows the recent change of look that Rediff and Yahoo adopted. They have also launched a new service for businesses to adapt to Twitter quickly and better.

Biz Stone explained the decision to change to have a home page that better represented the tool and its features. In fact the new page will also present features of the site that won’t require people to signup to get a feel of the service. In his own words, Biz explained the change as

“You can try it out without having to sign up, so you can get an idea of what Twitter is before you use it. We need to do a better job of explaining ourselves to people who hear about us and then have no idea what do to.”

The new home page will be more intuitive and engaging which is the core aspect of Twitter’s popularity and rise to social media stardom. It will showcase the real time nature and act as a resource in itself other than the fancy signup form that it now is.  The new page will have more programmed homepage to feature popular subjects, tweets and more according to the post. Search being moved to the home page is another exciting feature.

I think it was long overdue, and was always surprised to see the dearth of information on how to use Twitter for my benefit on the home page. So in that regard this is certainly a very good move. The point to ponder though is how this would impact the user base and users of Twitter.

  • Will the frighteningly high growth rates explode?
  • Will people simply use the home page and not any of the other services in the ecosystem?
  • Will it impact the followers and conversations existing users have?
  • What would that exposure mean for site traffic?

Are just some of the questions that I am now looking forward to know more about. In the meanwhile if you have some elementary questions about Twitter, don’t ask me go to Twitter 101. It is another new service they have crafted for businesses to figure out better ways to use Twitter for their benefit.
