Yahoo’s new Homepage is out. The new page was made live in the US along with few other countries like India, UK and France, after an year testing on it. The new homepage with a new design and layout, is more dynamic and with an all new set of customizable services it is far better than the older one. One might not have noticed it but Yahoo is the only search site with a news page in it along with a plethora of other services that they have added in their new homepage. The page is Ajax based, so there is no need of Adobe Flash player or Silverlight like plugins. The launch has been regarded as the most significant revamp of Yahoo since its origin.
Cool New Features:
- My Favorites – Introduction of third party services to the Yahoo home page was a significant step. There are more than 65 apps that can be directly added to the Yahoo webpage, like email providers (AOL, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail), popular social networking sites like Facebook & MySpace and several others. This section acts like a one check-in point for all these sites
- App Maker – If you do not find your favourite websites from the list of URL’s provided, you can provide URL’s and those websites would be added directly to the My Favourites section. In short, you can have a Yahoo Homepage of your own with your own set of favourite sites.
- Trend Setter – A new snapshot of trends, including the most popular searches, insights from Yahoo! Buzz, and fun facts from around the Web has also been added.
- Personalized News – A local news section has also been added for which one just needs to specify the city or the Zip.
- Social Updates – With the addition of Social Networking sites like Facebook and MySpace and with customized addition of twitter and other networking sites , Yahoo has made sure that the users are attracted and making it easier for people to share with their friends while exploring their favourite websites.
Why did Yahoo revamp?
Web is not the same as it was before. With several new websites coming in and with cool new features provided by them, Yahoo was just loosing it. Google has been coming up with several new applications recently and the inception of Bing has just made the going tougher for Yahoo. Under such circumstances, this was a necessary step.
Again, Everyone in an industry looks for profits. Yahoo is no different. As we told earlier today as well, the company is looking hopeful about its site re-designed.
What has made the site different from others?
Web is expanding at a very high rate and hence, it becomes difficult for users to figure out a way to manage all those sites at once. Now, with all their favourite sites at one place, it becomes easy for them to explore over the net . In short, the idea is to make Yahoo the “center” for people’s online lives.
Future Additions:
Yahoo is planning a “PC to Mobile Sync” feature that will create a mobile version of the Yahoo home page that stores all a user’s selected content options. Yahoo has plans to roll out new features over time that bring even more third party content to the site.
