Google Launches Friend Connect In Hindi – Also Integrates Orkut Friends
We had blogged about how Facebook was using its connect tool to connect with publishers and also seeing considerable success with the same. Now it seems even Google wants to do the same and has taken a step forward by launching the Google Friend Connect product in 47 new languages including Hindi. Friend Connect adds social features to publishers’ sites and is similar to Facebook connect. Here is our comparison of the two connect tools.
Well, Google hasn’t stopped at just launching the Hindi version. It has gone ahead and integrated Friend Connect with Orkut, allowing users to bring their Orkut friendships on the sites. One can now login to Friend Connect using his/her Orkut credentials and can also link your Orkut account and all your details would be pulled in from your Orkut account including all of the Orkut friends you’ve already made.
The Fight For The Social Graph Ownership
This is a fight for the ownership of users social interactions beyond one’s own platform. Facebook and Google both want to use their connect tools to enable publishers and gather as much social interaction data as they can from 3rd party platforms. Its like owning the social graph wherever you are on the web. For both Facebook and Google this is being connected to their users even when they are not surfing their sites. For publishers of course this is a way to know who their readers are even without going through the process of registering them and its because of this value that the connect platform actually works.
Integration Of Orkut – Very Important
In the larger context of things the integration of Orkut is very important from an Indian perspective. With more than 13 million Indian Orkutters this becomes a great tool for Indian publishers to try out. Also one is not sure whether the integration means action taken on the publishers site would be updated on the respective users mini feed on orkut. If yes then this would definitely have a viral impact for publishers in disseminating their content.
