Michael Jackson Can Bring Down Giants – Nearly Puts the Web on a Hold
26th June, the day when Elvis did his last concert, the day MJ took his last breath. Even though the occasion demands it the place is not perfect for a Michael Jackson obituary, so we won’t talk much on the glory and guts of him as a path breaking artist. However, the scene is perfectly set to talk about the impact of his death to prove a measure of his genius.
According to BBC MJ’s death caused a mini halt on the prime services on the web:
- Search giant Google confirmed to the BBC that when the news first broke it feared it was under attack
- The microblogging service Twitter crashed with the sheer volume of people using the service
- TMZ, the popular celebrity gossip site that broke the story following a tip-off that a paramedic had visited the singers home also crashed
- Keynote Systems reported that its monitoring showed performance problems for the web sites of AOL, CBS, CNN, MSNBC and Yahoo
And all this because of the speed at which news spread around that the singer was pronounced dead. People were incessantly accessing sources of news like Google, Twitter, other popular news channels online to know more on Michael. In fact Google’s trends page’s hotness gauge rated the searches on Michael Jackson as “volcanic”. Take a look at the picture below to figure that out better.
Michael much like his Thriller album completely burried every other news on the planet, and he brought the web on its feet. Imagine bringing out services like Google, and these days the highly reliable Twitter and not forget mega websites like AOL and Yahoo to its knees by the sheer volume of people wanting to access information. The average availability of these sites in fact went down to as much as 86% from 100.
News sites, Twitter streams, Facebook profiles, Youtube Channels, every place on the web is filled with Michael Jackson now. From lyrics to his songs to sharing links to mp3 files, to videos and posters, stories abuzz about the impact he had on on lives of many of his fans when they were young.
I think it had partly to do with the fact that most of the highly web centric lives of the 20 to 30 year bracket of people lead these days. These were also the prime audience who grooved to MJ and his music, and for many among them Michael Jackson was the icon of their times, who defined their era. And now with the digital life most of them lead it is no surprise that the epitome of their era grabbed the limelight in it.
Trivia – Michael Jackson holds a patent, for digital media enthusiasts who swear by innovation this is something you need to look at.
The entire article today was sourced from Tweets, social networks, blog posts, etc. that trickled in after the word spread around the globe of his death. May his soul moonwalk to further glory as I dedicate this post to him.
