Social Networking sites are not only meant for youth. Now, senior citizens are also have the chance to build their network, share photos and make new friends.. A new social networking site – Verdurez.com has entered in the market targeting senior citizens aged 55 and above. The aim of the website is to add colours in the lonely life of senior citizens.
According to a report released by Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) in 2006, the number of senior Indians going online is increasing rapidly. Successful senior Indians have adopted the technology and using this for various reasons like online shopping, share trading etc.
The website Verdurez.com is a platform for senior Indian & NRIs to network, find and make friends, connect to like-minded people and search for the resources. Registration on site is free but the condition to join the site is that the member must be above 55 years old. However, authenticity of the information is the responsibility of the user. Here, registered members can network through blogs, forums, book clubs, image galleries, polls, daily discussions, classifieds and chat rooms. Its registered user base is majorly from Delhi, Gurgaon, Vizag, Hyderabad and Atlanta (USA).
You must be thinking about the website name why its Verdurez and what does it mean, Verdurez name has been chosen from the noun verdure which means greenness, especially of fresh, flourishing vegetation, freshness in general, vigour. Promoters’ has chose this name b’coz they belief that life doesn’t ends when a person reaches a certain age, infact a new phase in life begins; it, too, can flourish with vigour and freshness. Its promotors are expecting to attract many employers who are actively seeking older employees for jobs. In addition, they have made alliances with many health and travel companies. I feel Verdurez is in its beta version as many sections of the site are not active or blank.
Verdurez is being promoted by Ishita Sukhadwala and Robina Gupta. They have also developed a portal for dog owners to find a mate for their dog (in other words, Dogs Matrimonial portal).
Social networking site for senior citizen sounds good concept, but i’m more concerned about the how many Indians of this age use computers and Internet and for how long they will use networking sites. Promoters should promote it well and associate some NGOs and oldage homes with them. We need our elder generation to enjoy the advantages of getting connected with like-minded people online through such social networking sites and don’t feel alone.
These days social networking sites are becoming very popular and many new players are coming in the market targeting different – different segments of the audiences but offering more or less same networking features. Its just like serving the same sweet to different customer in different packing. Maybe one more type of social network required is the vernacular one for different languages or communities given the diverse cultures in India.
