Nokia’s eco friendly move – ‘Return your junk phone, get a tree planted’

Nokia India has launched a new eco-friendly initiative on world environment day to adapt the use of recycling.Nokia has said that it will introduce this “Take Back and Recycle” scheme in Delhi from next month.

Under the-‘Return your junk phone, get a tree planted’ scheme Nokia will take-back your junk mobile and plant a tree in your name. This seriously attracts the eye towards the work initiatives of mobile giant to proliferate eco friendly uses of the vastly lying unused cell phones in households across India.

It also stated that 80 per cent of a used phone, including the headsets, chargers and other accessories could be recycled. The campaign was pilot tested in Bangalore, Delhi, Gurgaon and Ludhiana early this year, which received tremendous response from the public.

Nokia has also launched a slew of eco friendly initiatives specially for India where it is the largest MNC with turnover in excess of Rs. 25000 crores.India also serves as a base to export phones to over 50 countries .

Nokia previously launched Nokia Life Tools, to update farmers on farming and latest trends. It was also found that recycling awareness was the lowest in India standing at 17%.

Nokia has signed agreements with city based NGO Ahimsa and Rotary Bangalore Midtown to plant saplings in Kancheepuram district in Tamil Nadu and educational institutions in Bangalore.

Nokia has also intimated that customer wanting to drop the phone in a recycle bin can SMS ‘Green’ followed by the area pincode to the number ’55555′,which would then inform them about where the nearest Nokia outlet is situated. The customer can then submit the phone to the respective Nokia store.

Nokia at the same time could have launched a reward programme by offering a discount on new purchases or some cash back offer to attract larger audience. This type of initiatives may become a de-facto for other digital companies as today corporations can recover there cost by opting for CDM programme earning carbon credits for their work.

Definitely agree that Nokia should provide some sort of rewards program.
If you are looking to get rid of your old phone but want money for it, check out the variety of cell phone recycling websites out there that pay you for your used cell phones. I’ve used YouRenew.com and was really happy with it.

http://www.YouRenew.com also plants a tree or contributes to alternative energy for every transaction. That’s in addition to paying you money for the gadget you’re getting rid of. Sweetens the deal even more.
