Facebook User Files a $70 Lawsuit on Facebook and Subsequently Withdraws

Quite a few of us have surely seen the new phishing attack that has been doing rounds of Facebook, well this piece brought an interesting twist to the whole episode. Theodore Karantsalis, a Florida resident deicded that he was not going to take things lying down and decided to sue Facebook for $70.50 for not protecting his account.

The funny part however, was how he arrived at the figure, as Mashable quotes: The suit was filed by Theodore Karantsalis in Miami-Dade County court, and the figure calculated based on his claim that after being affected by a Facebook virus, he had to re-add his 250 friends, with an estimated value of 30 cents each.

Personally I’d have given my friends a little more weight than just 30 cents, but then I don’t have 250 friends on Facebook either. But then Karantsalis wasn’t after money, as he mentioned ”Basically, I filed to get their attention,” he said before agreeing to drop the suit. “Facebook has failed to respond to my e-mails and my phone calls.”

Anyway, the matter is now setteld after he did manage to get their attention and boy it does prompt me to consider such moves. Basically, he spoke with FB’s law department and they mutually agreed to resolve the caseand noted that FB and him also agreed to add each other as ‘friends’ and ‘poke’ each other periodically. And to go along with this FB is going to send him  a T-shirt which he will wear for his profile snap now.

Need a FB T shirt, just file a lawsuit against them I guess for you probably won’t get anything else from them. According to Facebook’s terms and conditions they are not liable for any dmaages caused by such security issues says the CNET report which broke this story. ”WE TRY TO KEEP FACEBOOK UP, BUG-FREE, AND SAFE, BUT YOU USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK,” says there statement of rights and liabilities.

It is interesting that this same document of rights and liabilities had got Facebook limelight for the wrong reasons some while back. And its attempt at democratising the document didn’t quite cut a chord with the masses.
