Virgin Mobile and Yahoo present ROCKATHON

Virgin Mobile, in partnership with Yahoo and Planet M are attempting a rocking feat! 100 hours of live music – Rockathon!

rockathon

The event titled ‘The 24×7 Rockathon’ is being performed live at Planet M’s store on Brigade Road, Bangalore and is being streamed on the web at Rockathon.in. Around 50 music bands from all across the country and performing live over 5 days (25 – 29 May).

Nice marketing stunt by Virgin Mobile, who by now are renowned for their ‘Think Hatke’ style. This first of its kind music fest will attempt to enter the Limca Book of Records for the longest ever continuous musical concert.

Virgin Mobile India CEO M A Madhusudan says, “This 100 hours continuous musical concert is an extension of the concept of our recently launched phone vJazz which allows Virgin Mobile users to access and download unlimited full-track songs.”

Well that surely make sense. Its a really nice example of an integrated digital campaign which has both offline and online presence and has enough PR juice in it to be talked about for some time. Not being a cynic, there is also a social angle to this event – Planet M and Virgin have pledged to donate Rs. 5/- for every customer who walks into Planet M during the days of the Rockathon to the cause of the hearing impaired.

Planet M CEO Subir Ghosh says, “The convergence of mobiles and music is certainly the way ahead in the field of music and mobile retail.”

Another record which Yahoo is gunning for is the longest live streaming record! It is currently at a bit over 50 hours and Yahoo seems to be on its way to double it.

The list of bands performing can be found on the site. Definitely check out Rockathon if you are a rock music fan!

Don’t see many tweets about it yet. Would be cool if there were live twitter updates about the bands performing etc. Do use the hastag #rockathon if you are attending the event.
