Maemo Harmattan, Nokia’s OS For An Ad-Supported Phone?

With a variant of it’s open source operating system Maemo, Nokia seems soon will be trying out an ad-supported Mobile Phone. Mobilecrunch leaked out the snapshot of the much awaited Operating system, Maemo Harmattan.

The “Home” screen, the distinctive feature of Maemo and the central point from which all applications and settings are accessed is seen to have ad space which Nokia will be using for highly targetted ads.

Initially built for Internet Tablets, Maemo is rumoured to be a part of Nokia’s larger goal of conquering the cell phone cloud services market and seeminlgy will eventually phase out it’s S60 Operating System completely.

According to mobilecrunch’s “deep source” in Nokia’s headquarters

- Harmattan is fairly dramatic shift from past releases, largely built for the jump to phones.

- The widgets on the “Home” screen are tightly tied to the rest of the phone.

- Home screen ad widgets would be tucked between these other widgets. Unlike the other widgets, ad widgets would not be user removable or customizable.

- Carriers will have control over the ad-units and the revenues will be split between Nokia and the Mobile Operators.

- Nokia’s goal with these ad widgets is to make them incredibly context sensitive based on behavioral data.

- Tentative release date is Q4 2010/Q1 2011.

Betting on highly targetted Mobile ad-revenues,Nokia is beleived to be pricing Maemo harmattan phone with heavy discounts.

What will be interesting to watch now is who’s gonna win the next big ad thing, mobile advertising? Is it gonna be Google’s Android or Nokia’s Maemo, well I’d like to bet on Android but what takes me back little bit is Nokia is already huge, the Biggest player in the Mobile business.
