State of Indian Blogosphere – Indiblogger.in Throws Some Interesting Numbers

The size of the Indian blogosphere is madenning, it is too widespread to ever give a concrete picture about the bloggerati in India. And this has not just to do with size but also the variance in terms of blogging habits, and how bloggers run their blogs. I mean I myself run over 9 blogs, with various names on various platforms besides blogging here at WATBlog, if somebody was searching for a blogger between 22-24 years who knows about online advertising I might crop up, but I might also come in a blog search for behavioural finance, not the perfect targeting or sampling for a marketer.

This is where groups like Indiblogger come into play. As a blogging community they can provide a detailed information that we can all access besides the blog posts that we can read. And the case in point is the State of the Indian Blogosphere statistics that they have now come up with. It reveals some interesting statistics that all of us Indian bloggers would obviously find interesting, it also gives a fair idea on how far social media stretches in India in terms where blogs originate from and blogging habits and other relevant data.

Some interesting facts that I noted and my observations about the same are as follows:

Male dominance (72%) – nearly 3/4th of the blogs that Indiblogger covers are dominated by males. I can’t dispute numbers, but one possible reason for such vast difference can be because men are more adoptive to online communities in India. Many women bloggers might not go be active on communities such as Indiblogger because a blog is purely a personal outlet than a communtiy outlet for them. On the other hand a lot male bloggers, especially those in their late teens and early twenties blog with the intention of reaching to a community and therefore are more likely to be registered on such sites. The view is disputable but then that would also mean knowing what can be the reason for male bloggers dominating in numbers over women.

regionallangs

WATBlog has covered the rise of regional content on the Indian web a lot this year. However, according to Indiblogger stats the scale is still tilting heavily towards English in terms of the language of choice for blogging. 92% of the bloggers use English as their mode of blogging. Among the 8% who stick to being Indian, nearly 3/4th of them are taken up by Hindi and Tamil, with others coming in with single digit figures. Hindi itself is used by nearly half of these Indic language bloggers. It does question the rise of regional content that a lot other reports have claimed.

citybrk

The Metros as expected dominate the geographic landscape of blogging in India, with IT hubs Bangalore and Hyderabad contributing nearly 27% of the blogs. Mumbai and Delhi stood at the same level with 14%. However, the other bloggers are evenly disperesed among Tier2 and Tier 3 cities, though the North East apparently has no presence at all. This clearly shows the impact infrastructure can have on social media and its growth in India.

freq

The frequency of posts showed daily bloggers at 8% . This is an interesting fact and a number that one would like to keep an eye on in the future. It shows the tendency and demand for daily content which is fuelling the daily supply and puts blogs rightly in the circle of influence among media.

There are a lot of other interesting numbers, in fact Gaurav Mishra also has an analysis on the same and this graph gives a better gist of the entire stats.

According to Renie Ravin these stats are taken from the 7895 blogs which Indieblogger crawled. Blogs which didn’t have valid feeds (which include blogs showing a new post every 5 minutes, or only one post) were left out. All blogs were approved by our moderators based on our submission guidelines.

Suddenly one might feel these stats doesn’t paint the true picture. Probably not, but that’s where my point in the beginning comes into play, that maybe a true picture is never possible. The only way one can improve and perfect these statistics is by joining communities like Indieblogger to give them a larger base to work with. On another note, maybe Indieblogger could have added a few more measurements including the use of rich media among bloggers, and other aspects that might have given marketers some food for thought. However, it is still a comprehensive coverage given the fact that it is accurate within the sample.

This is great statistic. As the author mentions, it may not be perfect, but it is a start, which can be continuously refined and improved.
