Twitter To Start Indexing Links For Search: Can Twitter Be Search 2.0?

Twitter Search is all set to redefine the way people search and track information on the net. Right now, twitter users talk about celebrities, mundane status updates and services. But the true hidden power of twitter lies in its aggregate data. And that is exactly the reason why internet has woken up and started seeing Twitter as a search engine. Twitter knows this very well, and is on the verge of putting in some really cool moves that will change the way users search for information and conversations.

People searching for news. Brands searching for feedback. That’s a valuable chain of information processing which can take Twitter one level up than Google. Twitter’s new VP of operations (a previous VP of search quality at Google!) is all set to introduce some really cool features into the search service. Jayaram has confirmed that Twitter Search, which currently searches only the text of a tweet, will soon crawl the links included in tweets and also index the content of those pages!

This is exactly what Google does. Let’s have a look at how Twitter can do it much faster than Google.

Twitter can never really replace Google, but be a totally different kind of search engine with the trump card being real time search. Twitter Search will also get a reputation ranking system soon, Jayaram told Cnet. So, all tweets will not be equal; a Twitter rank will be calculated for each user, probably based on several criteria such as number of followers, number of retweets and so forth. The exact algorithm is not known, but like all search engines Twitter can be hardly expected to reveal theirs.
