ENUM – Mobile Number Will Be Soon Used As Email Address

US-based Telcordia Technologies Inc. and TRAI are soon looking at introducing ENUM (Electronic Number Mapping) service to telecom subscribers.

What is ENUM (Electronic Number Mapping)?

ENUM is a new technology through which a mobile number will be used as an email address and it will as used as universal personal identifier for availing variety of Internet services. What this means is a telephone number from Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN) can be mapped to Internet functionalities through Internet protocol (IP) service. Hence ENUM will facilitate two people to establish contact all over the world through Internet by exchanging their numbers.

How is this made possible?

ENUM uses Domain Name Service (DNS) to translate telephone numbers such as +12426338620 into Uniform Resource Identifiers (URI) such as user@host.com.

How will this technology help user?

This technology will help in higher voice quality in Internet telephony and will also allow using Internet services in a telephone where input mechanism is limited to 12 keys on a keypad.

How soon can this technology be expected?

ENUM technology is in implementation stage globally and will be launched by Telcordia in North America by next year. While according to this article ENUM process could take a couple of years to be implemented in India.

Impact for Internet in India?

Well we are not familiar with the nitigrities of the technology but from whatever one can gather from the esplanations is that this technology could well be the gateway to internet for mobile and phone users. I mean the internet penetration has always lagged behind the mobile numbers in India. And this could help internet play catch up if implemented well in India.

Very good and informative article. Nice job done by you Seema. Keep up the good work. However there were little mistakes with spelling fo words and offcourse it can be guessed that mistakes are there because you were writing in a hussle or so. But your writing style overshadows these mistakes.. Keep up Seema nice work.
