September 20? 300 Rupees? – Are These Numbers That Surround Mobile Number Portability

Purely from a reader perspective, perhaps WATBlog hasn’t looked forward to anything else as much as MNP in its 5000 (or is it more now) posts ever. We first reported the number portability sighting way back in 2007. TRAI officially submitted its recommendations exactly a year back in April. And the first speculations of the date of introduction followed immediately as June of this year. And like a nervous bride, TRAI developed cold feet as the date approached closer and asked for more time – August it said.

And the monthly speculation has given way to specific dates now. I just saw these details on a Rediff peice on MNP -

Consumers may not have to pay more than Rs 300 to change from one mobile service provider to another while keeping the phone number intact, a facility likely to start from September 20.

The Rediff report, which is based on Press Trust of India also quote sources saying that the price may be less than Rs.200. I think for a lot of folks frustrated with their existing networks this might be very good news. When you think of all these years of bills and pre paid recharges, a Rs.300 would seem peanuts.

MNP Interconnection which has the license for introducing this service in the eastern and southern belt would go first with the implementation. So while Septmber 20 is the date set for the customers to begin using the service, MNP will begin testing the service towards the end of June itself. The first regions to be able to test this service by September if TRAI doesn’t leave us stood up on this date will be Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kolkata.  MNP will cover the other places in these regions by March next year.

Anyone has any word on when Syniverse Technologies plan to introduce this? And what do you think of Rs.300 and September 20,  viable?
