Earlier Tokyo based global telecom major NTT Docomo has acquired 26% of Tata Teleservices for $2.7 billion and now the duo is reportedly planning to strengthen the alliance and co-branding for it’s to be launched GSM service.
Tata Teleservices a major CDMA player in the country is now ready to float it’s new GSM service.“This new name brand will incorporate brand names of both Tatas and NTT DoCoMo. However, a name is yet to be finalised and we will do this before the commercial rollout of our GSM services,” TTSL Chief Marketing Officer Lloyd Mathias as quoted on business standard.“Having DoCoMo as a strategic partner will enhance TTSL’s ability to evaluate, introduce and manage next generation technologies,” said Anil Sardana, managing director, TTSL.
Now the question is,Does that really matter?, India already has established GSM players with various VAS offerings!
Sure, it does matter and a great deal, But why?
- NTT Docomo is a subsidiary of Japan’s incumbent telephone operator NTT with more than 53 million customers,which accounts for more than half of japan’s cellular market.
- The company already had a tremendous success in mobile VAS in Japan with it’s offerings i-mode, shortmail and video phone.
- The alliance is not only going to leverage on NTT DoCoMo’s experience in GSM and mobile VAS but also will leverage with DoCoMo’s existing vendors in the network support, application and value added services area reducing the time to market.
- Most of the VAS revenues are generated from the urban market and
when Mobile number portability is implemented all of the locked urban GSM market will liquidise enabling the new entrants try grab this market.
GSM and VAS space increasingly getting hotter we will not only see increased price war but a great amount of innovation in mobile VAS .

Nice Move by TATA , but as u said there are already some establlished GSM service providers like Vodafone Airtel and Idea.
