General Elections 2009 – Steroids for Digital Media Industry

Most parties in General Elections 2009 are riding on the digital wave to grab voter’s attention and it came as  lifeline for the recession hit Advertising Industry, while other major advertisers were trying to cut costs , Parties participating in general elections are spending  huge sum on digital advertising.

Recently Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Raj Thackeray hosted a site with Zapak,  Similarly LK Advani is also trying to grab some votes with the help of digital media. In all everybody is banking on digital advertising and this industry is growing Northbound sharply. It looks like digital media agencies are growing  northbound in this time of recession also.

Even the big players like Google , Yahoo , Rediff have jumped into the market to get their share of revenue from General Elections , The introduction of these big players hints how big the PIE is and how desperate are even these big players to get their share.

Google has collaborated with Hindustan Times and also launched a site for lok shabha elections which provides information related to elections at a centralized locations , It provides a nice map based interface which enables user to quickly navigate from one place to another and give an overall view. Their main aim is to make an informed voter and inform users about the candidates, constituencies and developing stories.

Rediff Launched a website India Votes 2009 which allows users to participate in virtual voting , share their comments , images , video’s . Rediff targets to increase user participation.

Yahoo is also not lacking behind and has has a site named http://in.elections.yahoo.com/ that is providing users with up to date information on the elections , user can poll , share views , start discussions on elections etc.

Campaign for No Criminals in Politics is a pretty cool effort to bring forward India’s lower house of parliament, one forth of whom face criminal charges. National Election Watch is an effort by 1200 NGOs and citizen groups to provide clarity on this entire gigantic process.

In every possible way Digital Media has shown its presence in Lok Sabha Elections and has got their share and Elections came as a boon to the Digital Media Industry.

Lets vote for a better tomorrow.
