VoteReport.in Launched To Report Election Centric Violence & Mishaps

When I attended the innovation brainjam at Proto.in’s Delhi edition last year, the top two spots were grabbed by ideas that integrated Politics with technology. Which goes to show that there is serious need of technology in this space. So its no surprise to see website cropping up that marry the two.

Votereport.in is one such initiative that has been set up to act as a aggregation of all the events where violation of the Election Commission’s Model Code of Conduct has taken place. Malpractices that happen during these Lok Sabha elections could include the illegal use of government resources for campaigning, incidences of divisive and inflammatory rhetoric in campaign speeches, and allegations of violence, intimidation and other irregularities during the elections. And this is just the tip of the ice berg.

Once you have reported, Vote Report, through its tie ups with various news agencies, human rights groups, blogs etc will spread the information to make it more public.

The list of tie ups is growing and includes biggies such as Al Jazeera , Livejournal as well as aggregators such as Desipundit , Global Voices . Organisations such as Liberty Institute, National Network for India, Citizens for Justice and Peace, and Women’s Political Forum have also joined hands with VoteReport.

There are 4 ways to report:

1. Submit an incident through the online form on VoteReport.in

2. Send an SMS to 5676785 with the prefix VoteReport.

3. Send an email to report@votereport.in.

4. Send a tweet with the hashtag #VoteReport.

What about the platform?

Vote Report is powered by two non-profit open-source projects  Ushahidi (it crowdsources crisis information through electronic means) and SwiftRiver (which engages citizen editors to curate multiple sources of information in a fast-changing crisis situation). These platforms are being managed by eMoksha

From the looks of things they have already received more than 60 reports and its growing everyday.

And what if things go well? In that case there’s also a tab where you can enter what went well.
