Now You Can Remove IE From Windows, But There’s a Catch

…And the catch is that you will need Windows 7.

Microsoft is trying as hard as it can to sell Windows 7 to their consumers. And if it means correcting their act then so be it?

A while back,EU started protesting the bundling of IE in the OS since they claimed it killed the competition. Now we hear that maybe in the next version there will be a provision to remove IE from the OS. That’s what AeroXperience a Windows enthusiast community seems to be yelling in this blog post of theirs.

As of now the testers claim that one can only remove the IE8 executable file (iexplorer.exe) without messing up Windows.

The blog post also has detailed instructions for implementing this feature. The entire thing also requires 2 reboots and a configuration setup.

  1. Enter the Control Panel and look at “All Control Panel Options”
  2. Click “Programs and Features”
  3. In the left sidebar, click “Turn Windows Features On or Off” (you will be thrown a UAC prompt if you elevated UAC)
  4. Wait for the list to load.
  5. Look for Internet Explorer 8 in the list and uncheck it.
  6. Click OK. You will see a prompt notifying you of a reboot.
  7. The machine will reboot once, configure things, and reboot again.

Though personally my thoughts echo with those of the guys at Silicon Alley Insider apart from many others in the tech community. Why exactly is EU so worried? And don’t they know that Firefox, Chrome (which is catching up) are already competition enough for Microsoft?

  1. Its not about FF and Chrome being competition enough at all. Its about the ‘lazy’ factor which they have to fight against. When a user has a software which does their job well (for most users its email and general surfing, orkut and FB) they won’t need to bother about installing FF or Chrome unless they are technical or have little leanings towards better technology.

Its only the lazy factor which matters here. FF and Chrome are much better and standards compliant too, but they won’t beat the IE market only because of pre-bundling. Get rid of that and then see how the demographic changes.

    I agree with EU.
