Its seems that online journalism be it blogs or citizen journalism are in vogue in the US. This year itself Contentnext Media which runs a bunch of blogs got acquired for 30 million $ while GigaOm.com and its network of blogs raised funding of 4.5 million dollars. Now in one of the biggest funding news stories HuffingtonPost.com has raised 25 million $ from Oak Ventures at an estimated valuation of 100 million $.

HuffingtonPost is an immensely popular online news site in the US and had clocked 300 million page views in the election month. Launched in May of 2005 by Arianna Huffington it had got a lot of brickbats and flak then.

This slowdown is probably the best time to raise money (that’s if you can manage to). As no one knows how deep and long would this slowdown be in the US. This surely puts Huffington in a great position to acquire talent and other sites which may gel well to its own.

Searching for India’s HuffingtonPost?

Well in India I have come few sites that ape the huffington model. Yes there is instablogs which raised funding as well but that is also targetted towards an international audience. There are few independant news portals which are targetting just India. I came across an interesting one in TheViewspaper at one of the Proto.in Startup Showcase events and was impressed by what they had going for them. But given that India is still a nascent online market it will be sometime before we see India’s Huffingpost story.

  1. Its strange to see merinews.com is not mentioned in your post. merinews.com is first newsportal who actually dedicated to promote citizen journalism in India. If you analyze you can easily found that they are largest in terms of daily contribution, No. of citizen journalists & Traffic(compare instablogs.com, theviewspaper.net with merinews.com). Please try to write a balanced report & dont overlooked ground fact.

  2. ^ Ouch!
Seems like you stepped on someone’s ego there Rajiv.

I did look up the data on Compete Bikash, and guess what? merinews is not on top.

Link to the data : http://siteanalytics.compete.com/merinews.com+theviewspaper.net+instablogs.com/?metric=uv

Also, 2008 called. They want their misinformed ranter back.
