20% of the World’s Wimax connections to be in India by 2012 - Wimax Laptops Launched

So Wimax Forum which is an industry-led, not-for-profit organization has projected that more than 27.5 million users in India would be users of Wimax and that number puts India as a 20% shareholder of the entire Wimax market the world over!
This means that in the next four years WiMAX would be a $13-billion market. And its not only the wimax forum but the government as well seems to pushing for the roll out of wimax in India. The Government has announced its decision to auction WiMAX spectrum by December this year. Telecom players like Reliance Communications, Tata Communications and State-owned BSNL are looking also looking to aggressively deploy the technology to boost broadband penetration. Infact players have already been testing wimax in certain cities and some have even launched residential wimax in some cities last year itself.
There has been some concern on the high reserve price for wimax spectrum by isp’s which was raised from the earlier Rs. 550 crore to a whopping Rs. 1010 crore last month.
Even though such roll out issues remain that didn’t stop Mr.A Raja Minister of Communications and IT from launching WiMax embedded laptop computers in India. The laptops with Intel chips inside from computer manufacturers such as Lenovo and ASUS.
If you ask me I would say that the wimax connections number is an optimistic figure to say the least. Just to give you an example I applied for reliance wimax for my home connection in mumbai and the person said it will take over a month to get one! When asked why? He said some device wasn’t available! In this kind of state I really doubt 2.5 million connections would be achieved. I guess along with technology customer service is another aspect that needs to improve if connectivity has to grow.

Any takers for the report, somehow difficult to digest this one looking at the broadband infrastructure and the spectrum fights that are currently on, this seems some funded report by wimax companies
Hmmm.. when I applied for a Reliance Wimax connections sometime back, the guys responded in a day. And took just one more to complete the setup. The connection is fast and reliable (at least by the standards set by other Indian ISPs and their “plans”).
Other than the high price of the service, penetration of wimax in India should not really be a problem.
I use the WIMAX Reliance connection in Pune and I must say that its fantastic with nearly zero downtime.
It all depends upon how the connection is setup and whether you have a line-of-sight dish with respect to your tower. If you get lucky there then you will never have problems.
I am from bangalore and i applied for a tata indicom wimax connection and it was installed within 24 hours.
i am from Lucknow planning to buy a new laptop so that even i can use a WiMax connection. which connection (company) will be good for me?
