Linkedin spokesperson Krista Canfield has stated to afaqs that linkedin would be looking at ‘Strategic local players as partners’ now there is no further diclosure from her whether these will be online or offline partners? Or how would these partners benefit Linkedin in spreading its presence in India?

linkedin

One may recall that naukri had launched a linkedin clone in Brijj which I haven’t heard of doing much since its launch except for the claim that it has 8 lakh registered users. Linkedin on the other hand has claimed itself to be the most popular network in India with more that a million Indian users. Its is also ranked among the top 150 sites in India and recently closed a funding that valued it at over 1 billion dollars!

Linkedin had also suggested that it could look to acquire smaller startups that fit its strategy but that was in the international context then. But could it look for acquisitions in India? Seems less likely as there are few startups that can potentially be worth at this early stage in India. But tieups can surely be an option and one such option could be with Web18 which owns B2B sites like Moneycontrol and Tech2 and Biztech2 where the audience would definitely match Linkedin’s target audience. Web18 which has ventured into many web properties still doesn’t have anything in the networking space and it wont harm its fortunes to tie up with an international leader like linkedin.

What do you guys think? Any Web 18 guys reading this?

  1. Rajiv, I recently wrote an article about ClickJobs.com and how it may be looking to change its strategic direction. I suggested that a tie - up with LinkedIn might be an interesting one. Check out my post about this here: http://www.moneyvidya.com/blog/?p=309

  2. What a poor article..I just did not get the point. How would Linkedin benefit from tying up with B2B sites like moneycontrol? Linkedin’s prime focus now I feel should be -
    1) getting more paid users from India
    2) getting relevant content for its users in India.
    3) Being present in local events etc.
How are these tie ups going to help them? I feel it will just dilute such a great brand.
Offline event tie ups may make more sense for them…Clickjobs is gone down under..hardly would interest them.

I hear techtribe has closed down and sacked people. Brijj I hear has 1.2 million users now with a contest going on at least that’s what their mailer said. I have recd some 10 requests to connect there…so its definitely still trying to get its act together.

  3. @Gayatri: You seem to be contradicting yourself: Just look at what you have said
“1) getting more paid users from India
    2) getting relevant content for its users in India.
    3) Being present in local events etc.”
All the above three points can be fulfilled with a tieup with Web18! As the audience from moneycontrol and Biztech2 are the paying kinds or atleast have the capability.
Both these platforms have relevant content for business people. And finally local events wont be problem for Network18 would it?
Point would be how they would benefit from linkedin

  4. IMO, Brijj has not had a great start in terms of quality. They started a contest wherein the person with the most number of connections in a stipulated time period wins an all expense paid trip to London. This resulted in people adding connections left-right-&-center. I am a member of Brijj, but now i regret joining. I get several connection requests from unknown people on a daily basis. While this competition will surely increase its user base, it is only leading a decrease in the overall quality and credibility of the site.

  5. @Gayatri:

How LinkedIn would benefit from ClickJobs.com - drive more user profiles, get these people networking. Remember that ClickJobs is owned by the

How ClickJobs.com would benefit - they could work out a deal whereby they get highly subsidized targeted advertising.

  6. @ Gayatri -where did you hear Techtribe has closed down and sacked people ??? please dont just spread rumours, be specific.

I wonder what techtribe did with the $10m funding btw ! seems a dead site with harly any active members. is this an indicator of poor online behavior of Indian internet users ?

  7. My 2 cents is LinkedIn looking for a partner to expand its local services, not to acquire at the moment

  8. I agree Linkedin can benefit with a content tie up in india and web18 or moneycontol is a good strategy IMHO. on techtribe, i heard they are making significant changes to revenue model and software and have let the recruiting managers go, but company is very much alive.

  9. hey just saw all responses

@Rajiv - increasing paid users doesnt just mean being present where your TG is. I think Linkedin already has a large population of high quality India workforce.
Pls explain what kind of a tie up with web18 would help linkedin get paid users? They already have recruiters who are using their product for free to head hunt - Sales is a dirty job in which you gotto meet and convince people why you need to pay.
Relevant content can be sourced from moneycontrol etc I agree…but the level of tie up would not be too deep.

@ abhishek, hey i just heard lots of people were sacked…apologise for making grand statements however you are right the site looks pretty dead.

@ gautam - hahaha…dunno how to respond, apologize for my impudent laughter, however drive user profiles to linkedin??? Pls share with us numbers and quality of profiles that you feel clickjobs has that would help linkedin.

@ vivek - sure about Brijj, I too have got some irrelevant invites, however lets wait and watch if an infoedge property can pull it off. I am a great fan of the company…I also feel brijj is strategically very imp for them esp with linkedin looking at India in a big way. Tough and rough road ahead though.
