Google has added one more Indian Language to its localization options for its News and Blogger services. Apart from English, Tamil has now been officially added as a language to these services from Google and the third being Hindi, which was added back in May 2008.
Google News, the search giant’s news portal, can now be viewed and read in Tamil and will feature news stories from various Tamil news sources on the web. The language can be changed from the bottom of the page, which lists all the available options along with English and Hindi.
Google has also brought Tamil Transliteration to Blogger, the popular blogging platform for beginners and advanced users alike. Bloggers can now publish content on their blogs in Hindi by typing the same through any English keyboard and in English text only. Apparently, it uses phonetic text and hence typing with a normal keyboard is made possible.
Tamil Transliteration has also been released for Orkut, the most popular social networking website in the country. Orkut, which has a fair amount of members, is now competing with Facebook, which is steadily becoming popular among the teens in the country. Tamil Transliteration on Orkut will allow the users to scrap their friends in Tamil, using the same approach as Blogger. Orkut too, like Blogger, offers Hindi and English transliteration at the moment.
With these localization options, Google is trying to woo more and more members by providing localized services to them. There are countless number of news sites on the web which provide daily content in English. To have localized news content in one central place and be able to track news and get alerts on the same via Google is an added bonus. It would be interesting to see how long it takes for Google to release such tools for other languages in India.
