The Big Brother definitely plans to keep a closer eye on you, in the days to come! In the wake of recent terror blasts all over the country and given the amount of security measures taken up by Delhi, it wasn’t surprising to know that the Delhi police are planning to upgrade their e-surveillance system at vulnerable locations in the city, by putting in place a digitized CCTV monitoring system.
The city police have invited “Global Expression of Interest” from companies for providing an IP based CCTV system to aid them in providing heightened security in sensitive areas. The tender for the same had been floated on July 18 while bids are expected by September 4th. Presently, Delhi police have stand alone systems of analogue or IP based CCTV cameras in busy markets of Sadar Bazaar, Ajmal Khan Road, Karol Bagh, Pahar Ganj, Chandni Chowk and Khan Market.
Although the move taken up by the Delhi police is commendable, one cannot help but visualize the sonic radar-based surveillance system that was showcased in the latest Batman movie, The Dark Knight. Yes, it might be too futuristic to think of something of that nature but it seems the even India is gradually moving towards a society where every single bit of your action is monitored.
The officials were quoted as asking for a combination of PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) and fixed cameras with day and night vision to overcome all technological handicaps. The project would also include integration and upgradation of existing installations. The bidders have also been asked to suggest a suitable system of interface between the proposed CCTV system and the existing city video surveillance system with intelligent traffic management system.
A senior Police official said –
Live monitoring of markets and vulnerable places for crime prevention and maintaining overall security to prevent terrorist attacks is the main objective of this project. It would also help in keeping a check on the alertness of the police personnel on duty and their locations.
