First announced on August 29th, 2007, at the Go Play event in London, NOKIA has been trying to make its presence felt in the social networking scenario for a couple of months now. Ovi (“door” in Finnish) is expected to the focal point of a personal dashboard that NOKIA plans to simulate, where users can share photos with buddies, buy music and also showcase applications. NOKIA’s Ovi enables consumers to easily access their existing social network, communities and content, as well as acting as a gateway to NOKIA online services.

As a part of the services offered by NOKIA Ovi, it showcases a music store that allows users to directly download music via their mobiles on PC (aka iTunes). One useful feature that NOKIA is offering up is a one stop solution for NOKIA Maps, what with the growing popularity of GPS enabled handsets even in a developing nation like India.

Ovi also features the N-Gage platform that made N-Gage and N-Gage QD mobile phones a legend in the genre. Yes, it’s back and with a vengeance. N-Gage platform has already been integrated into handsets like N82, N95 and N81. This should imply mobile gaming to take off in a big way in India, in a very near future.

Originally called Twango, “Share on Ovi” allows users to upload and store photos, videos etc and also share them online, directly from their mobile phones or even using their PCs.

Files on Ovi is a unique concept for which NOKIA needs to be saluted. Using this feature, NOKIA enables users to be able to access files on their computers, remotely, with their mobiles. Files on Ovi has finally gone Live! and is expected to catch up big time with the business users. However, I can even envision music enthusiasts using this feature to get download tracks off their computers, whenever they grow tired of their play lists.

Although Files on Ovi is still on a trial period, NOKIA does plan to make the service subscription based, with an option to choose 10 – 30 GB of data plan, monthly or annually. With 3G too making its way into the Indian market, this concept from NOKIA should hit off in a big way.
